Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
A technology that uses a wireless chip to identify and track inventory. In warehouse applications, what is called a passive RFID tag is energized by the RFID reader device (handheld, mounted on a conveyor, a portal reader on a dock door, etc.) and sends data, such as an LPN or carton number, to the reader and subsequently to the WMS. Can, to an extent, be thought of as a wireless barcode. RFID is still minimally used in distribution applications.
